I’m busy and I’m sure you are too. It’s overwhelming when you think about all of the things that you need to do around your garden to prepare for Spring. I think about all the weeds I need to pull in my backyard and wonder when I will ever have the time to do that and start my seeds. So here’s my tip… Just garden for 15 min. I can’t do backbreaking work too long before I really start feeling the effects of it on my lower back. If you’re physically or mentally struggling, it’s good to just take a quick break and work on just 1 task at a time. How do you eat a whale? One bite at a time. That comes from my favorite book of poems, “Where the sidewalk ends” by Shell Silverstein. When I was little, I remember reading these poems over and over and my head was just filled with imagination. Just like the little girl that ate the whale, one bite at a time, we’ll accomplish big goals by completing small goals. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed but if you just take 15 min to do a little here and there, it will really add up! There’s just something very relaxing for my mental health just to get outside for little while and do something that I’ve been wanting to work on. The goal is not to finish. The goal is to just be out there for 15 min, and take a breather from all other things you have to inside of the house 🙂 Don’t forget to set a timer to prevent burnout. Remember, you want to enjoy the time you spend in the garden and what we’re trying to do is to break down the tasks into smaller portions. Here’s some of my favorite things to do and in no particular order:
- Mow your lawn
- Prune the roses bushes
- Prune the fruit trees
- Pull an area of the weeds
- Pull out the dead tomato plants you left in the raised beds.
- Add amendments to your raised bed soil before planting anything new
- Plant some potatotes
- Direct sow carrot seeds
- Direct sow lettuce seeds
- Direct sow radish seeds
- Prune any dead leaves on your plants
- Plant onion bulbs
- Sharpen your pruners
- Clean your garden tools
- Plant some marigold seeds in a seed tray
- Fertilize your roses and fruit trees
- Empty out your Bokashi bin in one of the raised beds
- Plan our your spring garden with paper and pen
- Take some pictures of your garden so you can have some before and after photos
- Write down things you need for your garden
